Tim Davie resigns as BBC director general after accusations of ‘serious and systemic’ bias in coverage | Tim Davie

Tim Davie, the BBC’s director general and head of BBC News, resigned after a former adviser to the corporation accused the BBC of “serious and systemic” bias in its coverage of issues such as Donald Trump, Gaza and trans rights.

In a shocking move, Davie said his departure was his own but the BBC is set to apologize for the way the broadcaster edited Donald Trump’s speech.

BBC News chief executive Deborah Turness also resigned. This follows allegations from a former adviser to the broadcaster that the broadcaster suffered from bias.

The Commons culture, media and sport select committee has given the BBC until Monday to respond to allegations by Michael Prescott, the former independent external adviser to the editorial guidelines and standards committee (EGSC). He left this role in the summer.

Davie sent a note to BBC staff on Sunday afternoon, saying: “This is entirely my decision and I am hugely grateful to the chairman and board for their unwavering and unanimous support throughout my tenure, including the final days.”

“I am working with the board on precise timings to ensure an orderly transition to successors over the coming months.

“In these heated times, I reflect on the very intense personal and professional demands of leading this role for many years, united by the fact that I want to give my successor time to help shape the Charter plans they will deliver.”
