Sir Stephen Fry backs The Independent’s SafeCall campaign to help missing children find safety and support
Well-known actor and broadcaster Sir Stephen Fry supports IndependentSafe Search We’re running a campaign with the charity Missing People, which helps raise funds to protect missing children and bring them to safety.
Sir Stephen has been a passionate advocate for improving mental health support for young people and helping bring missing children home. He has spoken publicly about his own experience of living with bipolar disorder and the importance of access to care and understanding.
The case has deep personal significance for the comic, who disappeared for three days after becoming depressed during a theater performance in London in 1995.
Speaking in his documentary Stephen Fry: A Life on Screenhe recalled: “I couldn’t stand being in the play or being in London. I got in my car and drove to one of the Channel ports. I saw a series of newspaper headlines along the lines of ‘Fears to Fry’. It’s awful. I can’t believe I’ve made people so worried. When you feel like you can’t go on, it’s not just a statement, it’s a fact. I couldn’t go on and I would kill myself if I didn’t have the option to disappear.”
