BBC News chief executive Deborah Turness said the company was “not institutionally biased” after she resigned amid criticism that the Panorama documentary misled viewers by editing a speech by Donald Trump.

“Mistakes are made” but BBC journalists “are hard-working people who strive for impartiality,” he said in his first public statement since announcing he was quitting his post outside New Broadcasting House in London.

Both Turness and BBC director general Tim Davie resigned on Sunday in an unprecedented move following criticism of the programme.
