Woman who was stabbed in the neck in Birmingham dies of injuries | UK news
Police have confirmed that a woman who was stabbed in the neck in Birmingham city center on Friday night has died from her injuries.
The 34-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries to her neck following the attack at the entrance of Birmingham New Street station shortly before 9pm.
West Midlands police said the woman, who was in a critical condition, later died.
A man arrested near the scene of the attack will appear in court on Monday. Djeison Rafael, 21, was charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham magistrates’ court.
Following the victim’s death, police said an application would be made to amend the charges to reflect the fact that the victim had died.
In a statement, West Midlands police said: “As we understand this is a worrying incident, there will be additional officers in Birmingham city center to provide reassurance.
“We still look forward to hearing from anyone with more information about what happened or the movements of Rafael, who we believe was wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and backpack on Friday evening, November 7.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack on Smallbrook Queensway, a busy road adjacent to Birmingham New Street, one of the country’s largest and busiest stations.
Following Friday’s attack, the road was closed and buses were diverted throughout the weekend, leaving the police tent in place.
Appealing for witnesses on Saturday, Detective Constable James Nix said: “We believe this was an unprovoked attack and we are working to understand why it happened. We will have officers in the area today to continue our investigation and provide reassurance.”
“We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood thanked the police’s “swift efforts” in making the arrest. He wrote on X on Sunday night: “I was shocked to hear that a woman had been stabbed in an unprovoked attack in Birmingham. “My thoughts are with the victim, her family and friends.
“I would like to thank the police for acting quickly to arrest a suspect. I would urge any witnesses to contact West Midlands Police.”
