Panic at Red Fort as deadly blast sends crowd running – at least 8 killed | World | News

A car exploded at a crowded station, killing at least eight people and causing panic in the crowd. Firefighters rushed to the Red Fort Metro Station in New Delhi, India, after a vehicle was destroyed by the explosion. Delhi Fire Brigade deployed seven fire engines to fight the fire, which is believed to have been caused by the explosion.

Burnt vehicles and debris left across the street were seen in shocking videos posted on social media, while police and paramedics rushed to the scene. Delhi police said eight people, currently receiving treatment at LNJP hospital, were killed and many more were injured.

The blast took place around 6.55pm local time near Gate 1 of the station, a busy transport hub next to the Red Fort, one of India’s most visited landmarks.

As the cause of the explosion is not yet clear, Delhi Police Special Cell and forensic team are investigating the incident.

According to India TV News, authorities are evaluating the possibility that the explosion was caused by the cylinder or the battery.

Eyewitnesses described the terrifying experience and its aftermath; one local person said they saw “body parts strewn across the road”.

One of them told ANI: “I have never heard such a loud explosion in my life. I fell down three times due to the explosion. It felt like we were all going to die.”

Another said: “When we got closer, we saw body parts scattered on the road. No one could understand what happened. Many cars were damaged.”

Other parts of India such as Mumbai, Jaipur, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also reportedly on high alert.
