Sophie Rain Spends 50,000 Dollars on Groceries for Families Hit by Shutdown and Says She’s Not Done

Sophie Rain certainly isn’t waiting for Congress to come together. As Congress stalls, schedules remain in limbo, and millions of Americans hold their collective breaths, influencer, content creator, and increasingly one-woman comforter Rain is sending real money to real people who absolutely, absolutely cannot wait.

This week, Rain shared that he’s already paid $50,000 to help people buy groceries during this time of federal shutdowns. And of course, it’s Rain and he didn’t announce it at a press conference, it would be stupid for anyone else to do that at this point in his life because he announced it in a TikTok dance video. After all, she is Sophie and that’s what she does. Of course, she’s still in on it as always, and announced to her followers: “I’m still helping! Send me a DM and I’ll do my best to help!!”

In a video he posted to X earlier this week, Rain spoke candidly and explained in detail why he got involved. He understands what it’s like to need help. “With the government shutdown still in effect, I realize there are still many families struggling, especially with the pause of SNAP funding,” she said in a video message to fans. “I used to live on food stamps, so I understand. I’ve been through this before.”

For millions of Americans, the continuation of SNAP benefits during the shutdown was like a shockwave to systems that are barely functioning as they are today. Food banks are expected to be overwhelmed, another burden people must bear during this difficult time. Rain understood this and decided to take action without waiting for anyone else to intervene.

“I’m so grateful that I’ve made so much progress, and it’s only because of you,” he said in an update to his support team, whom he affectionately calls “you guys.” He also explained his point more precisely via a viral tweet:

“I’m giving away money to help those in need this week during the government shutdown. IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEEDS HELP THIS WEEK, PLEASE LEAVE ANY PAYMENT METHOD BELOW AND REMEMBER TO HOLD MY HELPING HAND.”

Throughout this week, Rain has been selecting names, paying bills, and sending money instantly to people left without basic support. He also uses his platform to challenge people in positions of influence to affect change.

“I hope this will inspire other creators to step up,” he said. “We are in a position to make changes”

Rain’s swift and transparent response resonated at a time when the entire nation was suffering the consequences of inaction. Rain’s tweets are equal parts gratitude, stories, and advice to those in need, neighbors, relatives, strangers, everyone!

As an entire country suffers as programs like SNAP are shut down indefinitely, Rain’s generous gesture is much more than an Internet trend; this is a lifesaver. One creator with a platform, a phone, and a heart bought food for hundreds of families. And it’s just getting started. If Congress won’t do it, Sophie Rain will.
