Bondi Sands recalls five sunscreen products over SPF concerns

Bondi Sands has become the latest Australian company to announce a recall over SPF concerns, and the first to remove products that do not use the same worrying base formulation.

Consumer advocacy group Choice revealed in June that more than a dozen popular sunscreens fail to meet their labels’ SPF claims.

There have since been concerns about products sharing a base formulation made by Perth-based manufacturer Wild Child Laboratories.

But the five recalled Bondi Sands products do not use the same formula and the company says the recalls are not linked to the Election findings.

“The safety and quality of our products is our top priority,” Bondi Sands said in a statement.

“Due to a potential product separation issue… we are recalling all batches.”

Product Details:

  • Bondi Sands zinc mineral broad spectrum UVA UVB protection sunscreen SPF 50+ face lotion 60ml (AUST L 412811, series GC032084 expires July 2027 and series 4843 expires November 2026); And
  • Bondi Sands zinc mineral broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection sunscreen SPF 50+ body lotion 120ml (AUST L 412812, batch GC032114 expires July 2027, batch GC063314 expires November 2026 and batch 4844 expires November 2026).

“Products may appear to have an uneven texture and visible water may appear to separate from the product. In this case, the ingredients are no longer mixed properly,” the company said.

“This can affect the Sun Protection Factor rating and the overall performance of sunscreens, resulting in inadequate sun protection.”

Bondi Sands warned customers who purchased one of the recalled batches not to use sunscreen.

Instead, customers can return the product to the place of purchase or contact info@bondisands.com.au to arrange an exchange or refund.
