Former First Lady Michelle Obama has suggested that the United States may not be ready for a woman to be president. His comments follow unsuccessful bids by former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Speaking at an event and introducing his new book, Obama said, “Unfortunately, as we saw in the past elections, we are not ready. We have a lot to do to grow, and there are still many men who do not think they can be led by a woman.” He added that not enough opportunities are being created for women to assume the country’s highest office.

Michelle Obama continues to be a prominent name within the Democratic Party, leading to periodic speculation about her potential candidacy for the White House. But he repeatedly rejected such suggestions, saying before the Trump-Clinton race in 2016, “I’m not going to run for president. No, no, I’m not going to do that.” Similar rumors have resurfaced during the 2024 presidential election, which features the rivalry between Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

During this election cycle, Obama actively campaigned for Kamala Harris, who emerged as the Democratic frontrunner amid voter dissatisfaction with President Biden. He warned against Trump’s re-election, highlighting the risks to women’s health and rights at a rally in Michigan. “Please do not put our destiny in the hands of people like Trump, who know nothing about us and deeply despise us. Voting for him is a vote against our health and worth,” she said.
