A charming and historic market town, it can make the perfect weekend getaway during the cold winter months. While most towns in the UK are at their busiest during the summer months, some places become even more attractive as the days get shorter and the weather gets colder.
It’s fair to say that Holt in Norfolk is one of these towns. Located about 37 miles north of Norwich and just two miles from the coast, Holt’s Georgian streets are lit with twinkling lights throughout winter. The town is full of thriving independent shops, art galleries and antique shops. There are also many cozy and welcoming cafes, pubs and restaurants for visitors to enjoy.
The first thing that catches visitors’ attention when they arrive in Holt is the attractive Georgian architecture and traditional flint buildings. One of the town’s most notable landmarks is the 13th-century St Andrew’s Church.
Holt also has a lively high street, home to many successful independent businesses. Check out Bakers and Lamers, a family-run department store that dates back to 1770 and is arguably the most iconic store in town.
Holt Bookstore is also popular with visitors for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Meanwhile, people can explore handmade pottery at Folly Tearooms or take a peaceful stroll along the trails at Holt Country Park.
Holt Sunday Market is held on the first Sunday of each month from April to December. It supports local independent traders, including artisans, designers, manufacturers, food producers and street food vendors.
The market has won awards over the years and usually hosts around 75 investors. However, visitors are advised to reserve parking in advance as it may be busy.
The town also has the advantage of being just 10 minutes’ drive from the stunning Norfolk coastline. It offers wide sandy beaches and magnificent panoramic views overlooking the sea.
The closest seaside towns to Holt are Cromer and Sheringham. They offer alternative places to visit for those staying in the region for a long weekend.
Some TripAdvisor users also recommended Holt as a place to visit. They agree that there is a good selection of shops in town.
