The Stone Roses bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield dies aged 63 as his brother pays tribute

Stone Roses bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield has died at the age of 63.
His brother Greg announced on Facebook: ‘It is with my deepest feelings that I must announce the sad death of my brother. Gary Mani Moonfield RIP.’
He added in the comment section: ‘We are reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.’
It is understood he died after collapsing after suffering a seizure at his home in Heaton Moor Stockport. Family sources say an ambulance was called but he could not be revived.
Sources told the Daily Mail that Noel and Liam Gallagher were informed of Mani’s death just hours before his brother Greg made the announcement on Thursday afternoon, and the brothers were “absolutely heartbroken”.
It’s only been two years since his wife Imelda Mounfield died of cancer. Imelda, who has twin sons, was diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago.
Just six days ago, Mani announced an intimate chat tour on the band’s website.

He would chronicle his experiences at various venues across the UK between September 2026 and June 2027, recounting moments such as the iconic Spike Ilsnad concert in 1990 as well as the Stone Roses’ comeback stadium tour.
Of Mani’s project he wrote: ‘It will remember Fools Gold, Wembley Stadium, Ally Pally, lawsuits, bucket hats, Adidas, ‘Screamadelica’ and ‘The Second Coming.’ This Is What the World Has Been Waiting For.’
Mani, from Crumpsall in Manchester, rose to fame after joining The Stone Roses in the 1980s.
Mounfield, who played on both of the band’s albums, was with Stone Roses until they disbanded in 1996, and later joined Primal Scream. In 2011, he announced that he was leaving Primal Scream to reform the Stone Roses.
After his death was announced on Thursday, tributes began to pour in from the music world.

During the 13-month recording of the Stone Roses’ second album, Second Coming, at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales, Mani met his wife Imelda.

After she was diagnosed with cancer, Imelda and Mani organized a series of fundraisers to raise money for good causes including the Christie Hospital, Stockport Charitable Trust and Maggie’s.
They raised funds for charity by holding auctions of works by David Beckham and Oasis.
He told the BBC: ‘I don’t want to sit around thinking about cancer and illness all the time because it’s so tiring.
‘And it was just a way of balancing that; Giving myself something else to think about, but something positive.’
‘Sometimes I have bad days and evil days and they have side effects. ‘And sometimes people have no idea I’m sick because I’m trying to do the best I can.’
Imelda’s death comes weeks after The Stone Roses’ bassist Pete died at the age of 61, also reportedly after a battle with cancer.
The musician was the original bassist of the Manchester band but left the band in 1987 to work for HMV as he did not feel worthy of leaving the band.
