Brazil: Huge fire broke out at the COP30 summit in Belem
A major fire broke out late Thursday in Belem, Brazil, site of the COP30 summit. As panic spread among the delegates looking for an exit, authorities took action and ordered evacuation from various parts of the area. A fire broke out in the main hall of the ongoing UN COP30 Climate Summit, forcing thousands of people to run for safety.
However, as of now, there has been no news of any injury or loss of life, but dozens of ambulances have been dispatched to the scene, while fire brigades continue to stabilize the situation.
The fact that the fire broke out at 2pm in the ‘Blue Zone’, where all meetings, including the main plenary hall, negotiations, country pavilions, media center and offices of all high-profile dignitaries are located, makes this an alarming and vital incident. Brazil’s Minister of Tourism told reporters at the scene that the fire was under control and that no injuries were reported.
As soon as the fire alarm was sounded, delegates, journalists and others rushed for the exit. The police took immediate action and took security measures in the area to prevent anyone from entering. Sirens were blaring into the distance. Visuals on television showed high flames and smoke rising inside the venue, a conference center on the site of the old airport.
