NFL news: JJ McCarthy in concussion protocol, status uncertain for Week 13

Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy found himself in concussion protocol after a brutal game in Green Bay.
The second-year signal-caller’s status is uncertain heading into Week 13, as head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that McCarthy will enter concussion protocol this week.
According to ESPN, McCarthy reported concussion symptoms as the team returned to Minnesota following a 23-6 loss against the Green Bay Packers.

If McCarthy can’t go on Sunday, undrafted rookie Max Brosmer will take over after Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending shoulder injury earlier this season that forced him to replace McCarthy.
After missing his entire rookie season due to a meniscus tear, McCarthy’s 2025 season has been an up-and-down season.

McCarthy, who was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has struggled while on the field despite playing in just six games this season after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 2. McCarthy missed five consecutive games before returning under center.
Minnesota is mired in a three-game losing streak; McCarthy’s final performance against the Packers saw him pass for just 87 yards and two interceptions on 12/19. He was also sacked five times in the loss.

“I have to get better,” McCarthy told reporters after the game. New York Post. “I have to do a lot of things better.”
The Vikings, who won with a score of 14-3 last season under the leadership of Sam Darnold, are ahead with a score of 4-7 this season. It may be ironic that Darnold will face his former team in the Seattle Seahawks this week, and McCarthy, to whom he passed the baton before making his free agency decision, could potentially miss another week.

In his first season on the field, McCarthy kicked six goals and made 10 interceptions in six games. He completed just 54.1% of his passes and also ran for two touchdowns.
