In view of the growing agitation, the university administration under the banner of Panjab University Bachao Morcha announced that all teaching and non-teaching departments and offices in the PU campus will remain closed on Wednesday. According to the official notice issued by the Registrar on Tuesday, the closure will apply to all departments and administrative units across the university.
Officials announced that the exams scheduled to be held on Wednesday at the Punjab University (PU) campus have been postponed.
“This is for the information of the public in general and students in particular; the exams to be held on 26 November 2025 at CHD40, CHD41, CHD43 and CHD44 exam centers located in PU Campus, Sector 14 and shifted to DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, have been postponed. New dates for conducting these exams will be notified later,” PU statement said. he said.
This order comes as various organizations, including farmer unions and labor organisations, are gearing up for coordinated demonstrations that are expected to disrupt normal functioning in Chandigarh and neighboring areas. The notification was distributed to all PU departments and also forwarded to Panjab University Public Relations Directorate for wide distribution via email. The closure is part of the university’s precautionary measures as the tri-city is prepared for intense mobilization and possible disruptions due to protests.
Earlier this month, Panjab University students staged a protest at the university premises in Chandigarh demanding that senate elections be held. A large number of police teams were deployed around the university campus earlier in the day. Barricades were also set up at the gates of the university campus.
Students are demanding the university administration to announce the long-awaited Senate elections to reconstitute the 91-member Senate, the highest governing body of Punjab University. The controversy began after the Center issued a notification to overhaul the composition of the Senate; This led to widespread political and academic backlash over the decision to dissolve Panjab University’s top governing bodies and replace them with nominated bodies through an administrative notification issued on October 28.
However, after strong opposition, the Central Government withdrew its earlier notification to the Senate and the Union on 5 November. Despite the withdrawal, student groups continued their agitation and demanded that the official announcement be made and the elections be renewed as soon as possible.
