India v South Africa 2025: Visitors hand India biggest defeat by runs to complete series sweep

South Africa handed India their heaviest defeat by completing a tough series 2-0 in Guwahati on Wednesday.
The Proteas claimed their second series win in India by 408 runs in the second Test and their first under Hansie Cronje since 2000.
The defeat surpasses India’s previous heaviest defeat in 342 matches against Australia in Nagpur in 2004.
South Africa posted their second innings on the fourth day at 260-5, giving India a record chase of 549.
However, as the visiting team bowled out India for 140 in 63.5 overs on the last day of the competition, Ravindra Jadeja provided India’s only resistance with 54 runs.
Spinner Simon Harmer took six wickets for South Africa, while Aiden Markram took a record nine catches.
“It’s a great feeling, a great effort from everyone to be fair,” Markram said afterwards.
“As a group, you have to believe you can compete against the best in their backyard, go into battle and see where it takes you… you have to be proud of the team.”
World Test champions South Africa won the two-Test series opener in Kolkata by 30 runs.
Before the 3-0 defeat against New Zealand last October, India had not lost a Test series on home soil for 12 years.
