Poundland announces unexpected store closure on town high street – full list of UK shops | UK | News

Poundland has announced an unexpected closure planned to take place within a few weeks. The major retailer was sold by Pepco Group to a subsidiary of Gordon Brothers International LLC in June 2025 for just £1. As part of its restructuring plan, the company aims to reduce the Poundland network from 800 stores to 650 to 600 stores.

68 stores were initially expected to close in the UK this year. However, other closures have emerged, including a newer store that was not on the original closing list. The popular high street branch is to close next month.

Poundland has confirmed that its store in Lymington High Street will close on December 14 as a result of its landlord’s decision. The company confirmed it had no plans to leave Lymington; but the landlord’s decision to close the property meant the retailer could not continue trading.

A Poundland spokesman said: “This is a store we do not actually plan to leave, but it is clear that the landlord now shares our intentions.”

The close-out sale, which starts on November 25, means shoppers can pick up their favorite items at discounted prices before stocks run out.

Councilor Jack Davies said: “Poundland is a really popular store in the town so it’s really disappointing that the company’s financial problems have led to its closure. “I pity the staff who have been made redundant so close to Christmas.

“These people will need support as the cost of living is still very high. The question then becomes: What next? This is a large facility with expensive overheads, so only a national chain can afford to take this on.”

“I would like to see a store where ordinary people can buy, so a Primark or Home Bargains.”
