The UK is bracing for bitterly cold weather that will continue into December, with snowfall and temperatures dropping below freezing. New weather maps from WXCHARTS, using MetDesk data, reveal wintry conditions are forecast for December 9th and 10th.

A wall of snow is expected to hit Scotland in less than two weeks, stretching from Edinburgh in the south to Ross and Cromarty in the north. According to WXCHARTS, it will drop about 5mm/hour by 6pm on December 9th. Temperatures will also drop that day; The coldest parts of the UK will be Staffordshire, the Scottish Highlands and North Wales. Temperatures in these regions can drop to -2C; This is much colder than the country’s average of 7C in December.

The seven coldest regions overall will be: Scottish Highlands, Aberdeenshire, Tyne and Wear, Lanarkshire, Staffordshire, Powys and Warwickshire.

The following day, the snow will once again be concentrated in Scotland, with only a single area falling near the Pennines.

Snow could accumulate up to nine inches deep in the worst-hit parts of the Scottish Highlands.

Separately, the Met Office’s forecast for 3-12 December reads: “Variable and often unsettled conditions are expected to affect the UK during this period.

“The most likely weather pattern is one of successive areas of low pressure coming from the west or south-west and then tending to move quite slowly around the UK.

“This means showers or longer periods of rain, with almost everywhere experiencing heavy rainfall at times, but the greatest chance of wetter than normal will be in the west.

“Snowfall is likely in the higher northern regions. Strong winds are also possible from time to time, again may be more likely in the western regions.

“Given the variable pattern originating from the Atlantic, temperatures will likely be near or slightly above normal.”
