Australian high school teacher pleads guilty to sexual abuse of 15-year-old

An Australian high school teacher has pleaded guilty in a New South Wales court to sexually assaulting a teenage boy near Newcastle on several occasions, according to reports.
Karly Rae, 37, who became a mother about eight weeks ago, pleaded guilty in October 2024 to charges of having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old boy, possessing child abuse material, training a child for unlawful sexual activity and doing an act with intent to pervert the course of justice, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) said.
Rae initially pleaded not guilty to the charges in May but changed her plea last month.
Her lawyer, Mark Ramsland, reportedly called on the courts to prioritize the case as she appeared in court with her eight-week-old baby.

Court documents obtained by the station reportedly show that Rae and the 15-year-old boy communicated on social media and that the crimes he is accused of committing took place in the suburbs of Bolton Point, Merewether and Belmont.
Police evidence presented in court included messages sent between Rae and the teenager on platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram.
“Hey, I’m sorry for removing you from Snap,” Rae reportedly told the teen. “So far I find this very appealing.”

A few messages later, the boy asked Rae: “Shall we pick each other up now?”
“It’s my fault,” he replied. “I take full responsibility. Do what you want/need.”
In another message reported by the station, Rae suggested to the boy that they meet up once again.

“Maybe we can have one last date before school starts,” he reportedly wrote. “I’ll bring my toy.”
The station claimed that the young man’s cousin saw the messages between the two on Instagram, told his parents, and the parents reported the situation to the police.
When police arrested Rae, court documents allege Rae told law enforcement she was unaware of the teen’s age.

“I thought you were of legal age and had dropped out of school,” he reportedly said.
According to the ABC, Rae was granted bail in the High Court in June after she told the court she was pregnant, but an earlier application was rejected.
He was scheduled to go to trial in August 2025, but those dates have since been cancelled.
Judge Roy Ellis set aside two and a half hours for the sentencing hearing on March 25 and ordered a sentencing report to be prepared in advance.
Applications will include “a lot of subjective material,” Ramsland said.

Police facts cited by the ABC noted that the NSW Department of Education’s professional learning transcript “indicated Rae completed child protection training in February 2024”.
He is released on bail while awaiting sentencing.
