What led to Kristi Noem’s push for a nationwide ban?
The urgency behind Noem’s call comes days after two National Guard members were shot in Washington, D.C., just blocks from the White House. Authorities identified the suspect as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who entered the country legally in 2021 as part of the Biden administration’s Operation Welcome Allies. The program resettled Afghans as the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan and prioritized people working with US forces, according to a report by Fox News and the BBC.
The attack not only raised security concerns but also reignited criticism of the vetting system used on Afghan arrivals. Noem argued that Lakanwal was improperly screened before entering the country. His condemnation quickly evolved into a broader condemnation of US immigration policies during Joe Biden’s presidency, according to a report by Fox News and The BBC.

What exactly did Kristi Noem say in her statement?
Noem’s message was direct and emotional. “I just met with the President. I’m proposing a complete travel ban on all countries that fill our nation with murderers, leeches, and rights addicts.”
he said.
In a separate post, he accused some immigrants of threatening American lives and draining federal resources.
“Our ancestors built this country on blood, sweat, and an unyielding love of freedom, not for foreign invaders to slaughter our heroes, suck our hard-earned tax dollars, or snatch the benefits we owe Americans,” he said.
He ended his statement with a sharp sentence: “WE DON’T WANT ANY OF IT.”
Their posts were later shared by both President Donald Trump and the Department of Homeland Security, amplifying Trump’s call for tighter restrictions, according to a report by Fox News.

How is the travel ban expected to expand?
Although Noem did not specify which countries would be affected, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that Trump had already announced travel restrictions on “third world and failed state” countries months ago. He said Noem’s recommendation would “expand” those restrictions even further.
Earlier this year, the White House listed 19 countries that would face full or partial immigration restrictions, primarily in Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean. DHS officials told the BBC they expect the updated list to be published soon.
Noem’s renewed criticism comes on the heels of her earlier comments pointing to the 100,000 Afghan citizens brought to the United States as part of Operation Allied Welcome. Before his travel ban comments, he wrote that DHS would overhaul its review system in the wake of the D.C. shooting, according to a BBC report.

How did the Washington attack change immigration policy?
The effects of the conflict were immediate. The Trump administration intensified its crackdown on immigrants following the incident that killed 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and seriously injured 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said Wolfe responded positively to nurses but his condition was serious.
In response, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services halted all decisions on asylum cases. Director Joseph Edlow said the pause would remain in effect “until we are satisfied that every alien has been vetted and screened to the fullest extent possible.”
Trump also instructed Edlow to review green cards previously issued to people from the 19 affected countries.
How far can management go?
On Thursday, Trump stepped up his stance and threatened to “permanently pause immigration” from all “third world countries.” In a Thanksgiving social media post, he accused refugees of causing “social dysfunction in America” and promised to remove “anyone without net worth” from the United States
The second-term immigration agenda included mass deportations, reducing refugee admissions, and ending the automatic citizenship rights of many people born on U.S. soil.

How did Afghan community leaders react?
The Afghan Community Coalition of the United States issued a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and calling for a “thorough investigation.” Emphasizing that the attack was the act of a single person, the organization called on the government not to stop Afghan immigration requests.
“Twenty years of Afghan-US partnership should not be forgotten,” the coalition said, referring to the two-decade effort that the US launched in 2001.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has called on the United States to comply with international agreements on asylum in the face of a growing wave of restrictions.
