Gaurav Gogoi seeks PM’s intervention amid administrative, financial crisis at Tezpur University

Gogoi wrote a letter to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention and requesting him to look into concerns regarding administrative and financial irregularities at Tezpur University. “I would like to bring to your attention serious concerns about the current state of management and administration at Tezpur University in Assam. Established as a symbol of the state’s aspiration for quality higher education under the Assam Accord, the university is now facing a serious institutional crisis,” Gogoi said.
“Recent developments have highlighted widespread dissatisfaction among students, faculty and staff over administrative misconduct, lack of accountability and poor institutional governance under the current Vice-Chancellor Professor Shambhu Nath Singh. The situation further escalated following the VC’s allegedly insensitive remarks following the death of Assam’s cultural icon late Zubeen Garg and the university’s failure to observe the state mourning period, which led to unrest on the campus and a magisterial inquiry by the administration. Sonitpur district administration,” he said.
Apart from the allegations made by the students, the Tezpur University Teachers’ Union has also reported several pressing issues, including administrative negligence, where the Vice-Chancellor is frequently absent from the campus without formal delegation of authority, leading to delays and administrative paralysis. “The academic performance of the university has declined sharply, which is also reflected in the significant decline in NIRF rankings due to faculty shortage, stalled recruitment and inadequate research support. There are also allegations of financial and procurement irregularities such as unauthorized use of university properties, excessive travel expenses, procurement without tenders and involvement of institutions lacking transparency. It has also been reported that appointments and extensions, including tenure of finance officer and creation of temporary contract, have been made in violation of the Tezpur University Act and Charter.” positions.”
In his letter, Gogoi wrote: “Tezpur University has long been a leading center of learning in the northeast and its current decline underscores the need for urgent intervention to restore academic standards and institutional integrity. I request your urgent attention to the issues outlined above and respectfully request that necessary measures be taken to resolve the challenges facing the University.”
