Duke put the College Football Playoff in limbo with a stunning overtime victory on Saturday.

The Blue Devils beat Virginia 27-20 to win their first outright ACC title since 1962.

Duke quarterback Darian Mensah connected with tight end Jeremiah Hasley, setting up the scoring with a 1-yard field goal on the fourth down in overtime.

Duke last won a share of the ACC regular-season title in 1989, when it shared that title with Virginia in Steve Spurrier’s final season as the Blue Devils’ coach. The conference championship game was created in 2005, and Duke reached that point this year with a five-team tiebreaker.

ACC regular season champion Virginia would reach the CFP with a victory for the first time in school history. While Duke still has a slim chance of making the playoff field, the win opens the door for a second Group of Five team (possibly James Madison) to sneak in.

JMU graduates Ben Overby and James Turner were at the game to support Duke.

“Nothing against UVA,” Turner said excitedly, “but we’re just here to support Duke.”

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips argued this week that his league deserves two bids: one for No. 12 Miami as the league’s highest-ranked team, the other for the winner of Duke-Virginia as the league’s champion.
