Louisiana manhunt continues for escaped inmate after dramatic jailbreak

Louisiana authorities continue to search for the last of three inmates who escaped from a prison about 130 miles northwest of New Orleans on Wednesday by scaling a crumbling wall.

The three inmates were identified as Keith Eli, 24, of Opelousas; Johnathan Jevon Joseph, 24, of Opelousas; St. Joseph Allen Harrington, 26, of Melville, allegedly used sheets and other objects to climb an exterior wall, jump to the first-floor roof and lower themselves to the ground, according to a news release from the Landry County Sheriff’s Office.

Harrington killed himself with a shotgun Thursday after a confrontation with police at a home in Port Barre, The Associated Press reported. reported.

St. Landry County Sheriff’s Office records show he was charged with nine felonies before his escape, including home invasion and aggravated assault with a firearm.

Police captured the second escapee, Joseph, the next day after a foot chase.

Sheriff’s officials said a tip led deputies to a home where he was hiding, according to the report. He surrendered after escaping to a nearby warehouse.

Joseph, who is also a convicted felon, had previously been charged with drug and weapons offenses, as well as first-degree rape.

The third missing inmate, Eli, remains at large and has been charged with attempted second-degree murder.

St. “We would prefer that he surrender peacefully, but we will not rest until he is captured,” Landry County Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz wrote in a statement obtained by the AP.

In May, 10 inmates ripped a toilet from the wall of a minimum-custody cell at a New Orleans prison and crawled out of it.

Jail video cameras captured the shameless escape, with footage showing the group climbing a fence, using blankets to protect themselves from barbed wire, and running across the interstate to a nearby neighborhood to change clothes.

Inmates wrote messages such as “Easy LOL” and “WE ARE INNOCENT” near the hole they used to escape from prison.

The last remaining fugitive, a four-time convicted murderer, was arrested five months after the escape following a dispute with authorities in Atlanta.

Three jail employees have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Fox News Digital previously reported.

According to Guidroz, an internal investigation has been launched and prison supervisory staff will provide a comprehensive report.
