Australia news live: Bragg says ‘every back yard’ could fit in a new house or granny flat as he outlines Coalition housing policy | Australia news

Shadow minister says Liberal party’s future depends on strong housing policy

Sarah Basford Channels

shadow housing minister Andrew BraggHe will stake the Liberal future on adopting a strong housing policy and will sound the alarm at a centre-right event this afternoon.

Bragg, one of the party’s leading moderates, will speak at a Center for Independent Studies event in Sydney, warning that depopulation in former Liberal inner-city strongholds will cost the party even more votes in next elections.

In a broad speech on housing policy ideas that have yet to be formally adopted by the opposition, Bragg will argue that zoning expansion (rezoning areas for taller buildings) and light density (increased density in single-detached neighborhoods) could increase housing supply and construction efficiency in the short term.

The shadow housing secretary will say:

Simply put, we need more buildings. It doesn’t matter what they are. We need to build like crazy. We must think outside the box; Any backyard could potentially host a new house or granny flat if the owner wanted it.

premier of nsw Chris Minns He said a member of the national parks’ fire brigade died in the state’s fires.

“This is a stark reminder of how difficult and dangerous this job is, and how the people who risk their lives to protect life and property have done an incredible job for us in this state,” Minns said, noting that a man was likely killed by a tree.

Minns told ABC News Breakfast: “It’s an extremely sad turn of events and it’s a sad day for New South Wales this morning.

Nearly 700 firefighters across NSW are working to contain the fires today, nine of which are out of control.

With the summer season just days away, Minns said it was “a pretty inauspicious start to the start of the bushfire season.”
