Designer reveals why Solange Knowles attacked Jay-Z in 2014 elevator fight

The infamous elevator fight between Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé’s younger sister, Solange Knowles, is back in the spotlight after a fashion designer revealed the cause of the much-publicized conflict.

In May 2014, a leaked surveillance video from the Standard Hotel in New York showed Solange physically attacking Jay-Z in an elevator with Beyoncé standing next to him. The video was released by TMZ, and numerous rumors circulated about why Solange violently confronted her brother-in-law after the trio attended the 2014 Met Gala.

During a recent interview Daily MailOscar G. Lopez claimed that Solange became enraged after witnessing an interaction between Jay-Z and fashion designer Rachel Roy, who has been accused of having an affair with the rapper. Lopez, who designed Roy’s 2014 Met Gala dress, said Solange was offended after Jay-Z praised the dress.

“I think Jay complimented her on the dress and Beyoncé’s sister thought it was inappropriate, so there was some drama there,” Lopez said.

In the video, which had no sound, Solange was seen kicking and punching Jay-Z as a bodyguard tried to restrain her. Jay-Z did not appear to retaliate against Solange, instead raising his arms to block her blows and backing away from her, towards the wall of the elevator.

Meanwhile, Beyonce stood motionless in the corner of the elevator and did not intervene.

A few hours after the video was released, the incident made international headlines and dominated social media.

Lopez told the Daily Mail that widespread coverage of the event helped boost his business. She explained that Roy was “late” for the event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and missed being photographed on the red carpet in the dress she had prepared for him.

However, Lopez recalled that “the dress was all over the news” after the scandal.

“Any kind of press is good press,” he said. “It’s nice to have people talking about you.”

“Sometimes you take advantage of a scandal, even if you’re not directly part of it,” Lopez continued. “Let’s call it collateral damage. It was meant to be.”

She went on to tell the Daily Mail that she and Roy laughed off speculation that she was in a relationship with Jay-Z. Lopez said they thought the rumors were “so ridiculous” due to Roy’s previous marriage to Jay Z’s former friend and Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Damon Dash.

Fox News Digital has reached out to representatives for Jay-Z, Beyonce, Solange and Roy for comment.

Roy and Dash were married from 2004 to 2009. The two met while working at Rocawear, the clothing brand created by Jay-Z and Dash. Roy began his career as an intern at the company and later became the Creative Director of the Rocawear women’s collection.

Immediately after the elevator incident on May 5, 2014, Beyoncé and Solange left the hotel in one vehicle, while Jay-Z left separately. A week later, TMZ released the surveillance video and the Standard Hotel announced it was launching an investigation into the leak.

On May 14, the hotel confirmed that an employee was fired for leaking the video.

A day later, Jay-Z, Beyonce and Solange broke their silence in a joint statement to the Associated Press.

“There has been much speculation as to what triggered the unfortunate incident.” But the most important thing is that our family gets through this,” they wrote. “Jay and Solange take their share of responsibility for what happened. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter playing out in public. “They both apologized to each other and we moved on as a united family.”

The statement continued: “Reports that Solange was drunk or displayed erratic behavior throughout that evening are completely false.” “At the end of the day, families have problems, and we are no different. We love each other, and above all else, we are a family. We have put this behind us and hope everyone else does the same.”

Jay-Z addressed the incident with Solange during his 2017 appearance on the show. “Rap Radar” podcast.

“We’ve had one disagreement so far. We were on good terms before and after,” he said. “She’s like my sister. I’ll protect her. This is my sister, not my aunt. My sister. Period.”

The “Empire State of Mind” singer noted that the brothers were fighting.

“I’ve been fighting with my brothers and arguing with my brothers all my life,” Jay Z said. “It just so happens that who we are, these things go into a different area. But that’s nothing.”

“We’ve always had a great relationship,” he said.

Roy, meanwhile, fueled speculation of an affair between her and Jay-Z after Beyoncé implied the rapper was unfaithful on her album “Lemonade,” released in April 2016.

The album included the song “Sorry” and included the lyrics: “He only wants me when I’m not there. He better call Becky with the good hair.”

Roy later posted a photo of herself on Instagram, writing: “I don’t care about good hair, but we will always use good light for selfies or personal facts. Live in the light #nodramaqueens.”

Following online backlash from Beyonce’s fans, Roy deleted the post and made her Instagram account private.

He later wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “I respect love, marriage, family and power. What no one should tolerate, no matter what, is bullying of any kind.”

Roy directly denied that she was the woman behind the infamous remarks in an interview with People magazine.

“I want to put speculations and rumors to rest. My Instagram post was intended to be fun and lighthearted, it was misconstrued as anything other than that,” Roy said. People. “The idea that the song refers to me personally has no validity. There is no truth to the rumors.”

In his album “4:44”, released in 2017, Jay Z admitted that he cheated on Beyoncé and expressed his regret. He also referenced his alleged mistress “Becky” in his song “Family Feud”, which includes the lyrics “Let me leave Becky alone”.

He also touched upon the elevator incident in his song “Kill JAY-Z” from the same album.

“You turned Solange on/You knew all along, all you said was wrong,” Jay-Z sings to himself at one point in the song.

In a 2018 interview with David Letterman for his Netflix show “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” Jay-Z opened up about how he and Beyoncé overcame their marital problems, including his infidelity.

“I have a beautiful wife who is understanding and knows that I am not the worst thing I have done,” he said. “And it’s like we’ve done the hard work of going to therapy and, you know, we really love each other, right? So we’ve really put in the work.”
