One of Netflix’s biggest media acquisitions in a crowded field was revealed last week. announced Warner Bros. has acquired Discovery and its related streaming service HBO Max for approximately US$83 billion.

The deal combines two of the world’s largest entertainment companies into a single mega-corporation that controls nearly half of the streaming market and has been criticized as highly anti-competitive.

The Writers Guild of America called on the US government to block the merger, saying it would “eliminate jobs, lower wages, worsen conditions for all entertainment workers, raise prices for consumers, and reduce the volume and variety of content for all audiences.”
