Drone drops steak and crab legs for prisoner feast but South Carolina guards find it first

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (AP) — ‘It was three weeks before Christmas and a guard found a package dropped from a drone on the prison yard.
Steak, grass, crab legs and smoking for days. And a can of Old Bay to sweeten it all.
The South Carolina Department of Corrections said on social platform
A photo taken from the Bishopville jail showed a raw steak, crab legs and Old Bay still packaged in the grocery store, along with plastic bags of marijuana and several cartons of cigarettes. Authorities said the drone was also seized on Sunday morning.
Prison officials said the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
“I imagine the inmates waiting for the package were cranky,” prison spokeswoman Chrysti Shain said.
Keeping trafficking out of state prisons is a constant struggle. People were launching or using catapults to push packages of cellphones, drugs or other illicit items over the perimeter fence until authorities removed the fence and added netting at the top.
People trying to smuggle something behind bars have turned to drones, allowing corrections officers to constantly patrol the prison yard and small planes trying to drop off packages just outside.
Flying a drone near a prison in South Carolina is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail. Leaving contraband in prison is a crime that can land a person behind bars for 10 years.
