Full ATAR score and VCE exam results to be released at 7am, follow live commentary ahead of honour roll and school rankings for Melbourne and Victoria

Things don’t always go to plan, and some students have been mistakenly told they were eligible for a scholarship at the University of Melbourne due to an administrative error at the state’s higher education admissions centre.

Young people who applied for equity scholarships to the prestigious institution were told last week that they were eligible for the program to study next year.

But the university had to re-write to candidates, many of whom completed their Year 12 this year, to inform them that they were in fact ineligible and had been “misclassified” by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Center (VTAC).

News of the bureaucratic error comes as tens of thousands of students across the state are waiting to receive their VCE results and university entrance scores (ATAR) today.

A source familiar with the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly said the numbers could run into the thousands.

The university said it worked with the admissions center to support misidentified students, but no scholarship offers were made.
