Before attending house, jailed LS MP observes day-long hunger strike

Srinagar: Jailed Lok Sabha member from Baramulla and Awami Ittehad Party chief Engineer Rashid went on a day-long hunger strike in Tihar jail on International Human Rights Day. AIP spokesperson Inam un Nabi said Rashid started the strike before attending the Parliament session on Wednesday morning.

“He used this symbolic step to remind the government of the unresolved concerns of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and the need for a humane and sincere approach in addressing them,” he said.

Rashid, who informed the Lok Sabha of his plan to fast on December 10, said the aim of the strike was to draw attention to decades of suffering and unresolved grievances in J&K. He called on both the treasury and Opposition benches in Parliament to “respond with a humanitarian approach rather than allowing political considerations to overshadow the suffering of the people”.

Earlier, Engineer Rashid had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the growing disconnect between the lieutenant governor and the J&K chief minister. In the letter, Rashid wrote that the growing administrative disconnect between the LG administration and the CM office “has begun to create uncertainty among citizens and slows down decision-making on key development and welfare issues.”

Engineer Rashid urged the Prime Minister that “only his intervention can ensure proper governance, restore clarity of functioning and bolster the credibility of both institutions for the greater interest of J&K.”
