Syria’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor on Wednesday approved the registration of a Jewish organization for the first time in the country’s history.

Hind Kabawat, the first woman appointed to Syria’s interim government cabinet, registered the Jewish Heritage Foundation (JHS) in Syria, marking a turning point for the Jewish community in the country.

This move allows JHS to operate fully in Syria, including establishing an office there, officially working with the government and local communities, and serving as the recognized organization responsible for protecting Jewish sites.

Registration also allows the foundation to coordinate the return of Jewish property and regularly bring Jewish delegations to the country.

“Judaism and Syrian Jews have long been part of Syria’s religious and cultural landscape. Restoring the rights to belong, to visit, and to return to their homeland is a natural step toward a more just, tolerant, and inclusive society,” Kabawat said in a statement to Fox News Digital. he said.

“For decades, Syrian Jews have been denied the right to celebrate their cultural and religious heritage, and today we take a step towards long-term peace, security and stability. We wish the organization success in its efforts to preserve the Jewish heritage in Syria and look forward to deeper cooperation and stronger relationships moving forward.”

Syria’s Jewish community, which once numbered in the tens of thousands, declined dramatically after 1948 as restrictions and regional tensions pushed many families to emigrate.

“It gives me great pleasure to be able to travel regularly to Damascus and Aleppo. Syria was closed to us for so long. The Assad regime would arrest anyone who met or hosted a Jew. Today, Syria is finally back to its people, regardless of their religious and ethnic background.”
