Boaties’ day descends into chaos as car rolls into river off Maylands boat ramp as private tour watches on

What was supposed to be a spectacular day on the water for a Perth boater quickly turned into chaos after the ute he was using to launch his boat rolled off the ramp and into the river at Maylands Foreshore Reserve.

A video posted on social media by Wild West Charters shows two men trying to get out of the sinking boat, while customers on the charter boat witnessed more than just a wildlife spectacle as they watched the men climb to safety.

David McDonald, owner of Wild West Charters, said the car had rounded the corner at Maylands when it “appeared” in the river and began to sink rapidly.

“It was a little scary at first because there were bodies flying out of the car as we were coming down,” Mr. McDonald said.

“We were a little worried if there was anyone else there, but there were only two people.

“They didn’t have any ropes, so I took the rope from my boat and tried to put it on the car and pull it back, but it fell off the edge of the concrete (ramp) and couldn’t really be retrieved.”

Mr McDonald said the two men floating in the water were “in shock”.

“I didn’t get a chance to ask what actually happened, it wasn’t the time to ask questions,” he said.

“They were apparently launching their boat and had an accident and the car, boat and trailer fell into the river.

“It was a bit of a strange sight for a boat tour.”

A tow truck had arrived when the charter left and Mr McDonald believes the vehicle has since been taken.
