California home explodes on video, hospitalizing 6

Six people were hospitalized after a devastating house explosion caught on video in California.
Footage from a doorbell camera at a home near Hayward in the San Francisco Bay Area shows a property being blown up and debris flying into the air on Thursday. Later, when the fire broke out, sirens were heard.
“It was terrible,” said Christian Maldanado, who shot the video. he told KTVU. “It was like a scene from Hollywood. It wasn’t real.”
The Alameda County Fire Department said 75 firefighters responded to the three-alarm blaze, which destroyed three buildings and damaged adjacent homes due to the explosion and fire.
The ministry added that six people were taken to local hospitals and the cause of the incident was being investigated.

The explosion occurred in the unincorporated area of Ashland, near the city of Hayward. The city is home to about 160,000 people in the East Bay, 15 miles south of Oakland.
Pacific Gas & Electric Co. Around 7:35 a.m., they were alerted that a construction crew (not with the company) had damaged an underground gas line. Utility workers arrived to isolate the damaged line, but gas was leaking from several places.
Workers stopped the gas flow at 9.25am and the explosion occurred shortly afterwards.
PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian confirmed that the gas had been flowing for two hours but that the explosion occurred 10 minutes after the line was shut down.

Alameda County Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Nishimoto said three structures on two separate lots were severely damaged. Some of the 75 firefighters responding were forced to retreat momentarily when they felt electrocution from downed power lines in the area.
“All the windows in my house burst open,” a local resident identified as Deborah told KTVU. “There are cracks in the ceiling. My house collapsed.”
Construction work was being carried out for wider sidewalks and bicycle paths in the neighborhood of single-storey houses near two highways.
Interstate Highway 238 was temporarily closed by the California Highway Patrol as authorities responded to the explosion and fire, according to KTVU.

PG&E told the station that three of the company’s employees were among the injured, while a family member said the other three injured were residents of the house that exploded and were being treated for third-degree burns.
