Footage from the ABC showed dozens of emergency vehicles, including police units and ambulances, in the Bondi area.
Residents told the Guardian they could hear helicopters.

The news and images from Bondi this evening are extremely saddening.
Police and emergency services are responding and the public must follow official advice.
We will inform the public when more information becomes available.
The public is asked to stay away from the Bondi area
NSW police have just reiterated their request for the public to stay away from the Bondi area. In another statement published on social media, the police said:
Attention to the media; Please share our message to avoid the Bondi Beach area while the police operation continues. We are asking people in the area to take shelter until we determine what happened. Our media officer is on the way to the scene, more information will be provided when confirmed.
A NSW police spokesman told the Guardian they had received “numerous calls” from the public about shootings in the Bondi area.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said there was “certainly a shooting in the area” but the situation was evolving quickly. They said:
We have many units in the region. We definitely treat more than one person and have more than one vehicle [responding].
The ambulance service received first aid calls just before 7pm. The ambulance spokesman added that the incidents were concentrated in the Queen Elizabeth Drive area.
