Opposition Buxar MP Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Sunday, December 14, 2025, wrote to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to set up a pump storage and run-of-river hydropower projects at Kaimur to make Bihar energy self-sufficient.
In view of the increasing peak hour electricity demand in Bihar, Sudhakar Singh submitted the proposal to the state government. In the letter, he requested that priority be given to the establishment of hydroelectric projects.
Mr. Singh noted that Bihar is a state with a developing economy where the demand for electricity is increasing rapidly due to industrial development, agriculture, irrigation, urbanization and domestic use.
“Availability of electricity, especially during peak hours, is becoming a major challenge. Therefore, the state needs to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and take concrete steps towards clean, green and sustainable energy sources,” Mr. Singh said.
He explained that many rivers, including Durgawati, Kuhira, Karmanasha and Suara, originate from the Kaimur Hills and important reservoirs such as Durgawati and Jagdahwa already exist. By taking advantage of these natural resources, additional power can be provided instantly during peak hours without the need to waste water through pump storage technology.
Mr. Singh stated that a pumped storage power plant with a capacity of over 2,000 MW could be developed in the Durgawati Reservoir Project and around 500 MW in the Jagdahwa Reservoir on the Kuhira River.
Additionally, the potential to generate approximately 250 MW of energy using run-of-river technology has already been identified in the Kaimur region and should be implemented soon.
These projects will not only strengthen Bihar’s energy self-sufficiency but will also play an important role in protecting the environment, reducing carbon emissions, creating employment for local youth and overall development of Kaimur district, he asserted.
The Buxar MP requested the State Government to conduct surveys for these projects on a priority basis and take necessary policy and administrative decisions at the earliest so that Bihar can be included in the category of leading states in the country in the field of clean and green energy.
In the letter, he stated that he had earlier informed the Bihar Energy Minister about this issue through a letter dated July 11, 2021, but no action was taken.
