Parliament Winter session Day 11 LIVE: Lok Sabha to take up Grants and Appropriation Bill

The government is expected to introduce a bill in the ongoing Winter session of Parliament amending the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and renaming the flagship rural employment scheme as ‘Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana’.

According to senior government officials, the amended bill was approved by the Union Cabinet in its meeting on Friday, December 12, 2025. There was no official statement regarding the proposal during the Cabinet briefing by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The original bill passed by Parliament on 25 August 2005 was called the “National Rural Employment Guarantee Bill”. The “Mahatma Gandhi” suffix was added in 2009.
