Rob Reiner’s son Nick struggled with addiction, volatility before parents’ deaths

Rob and Michele Reiner’s son Nick has had his share of battles over the years, from struggles with addiction to violent outbursts. On Monday, the 32-year-old man was arrested and charged with suspicion of murder in the horrific deaths of his parents, who were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home on December 14.

Reiner was initially set on $4 million bail, but records show he was being held without bail. He was transferred to the Twin Towers Correctional Institution on Monday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators believe Rob and Michele injured with a knifeaccording to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

“This isn’t the first time their son has been violent,” said a longtime neighbor. New York Post. “I know about another incident with Nick a few years ago, but I won’t say any more than that. I never thought it would come to this.”

“Rob was always heartbroken over his son’s inability to overcome his addiction,” the neighbor continued. “I know they wanted him to get help, to go to rehab, but he wanted to get help while he was at home; he didn’t want to be treated in a facility.”

“And I know they’ve been discussing this for years. Nick has had demons for a long time,” they added. “This is a nightmare. The whole thing is a tragedy.”

Another neighbor told Fox News Digital that Nick went to rehab years ago and thought he was “back to normal.”

“Many years ago, when he was a teenager, he was using heroin and cocaine, he went to rehab and got better and apparently got back to normal, but obviously that wasn’t the case,” said Maryanne Lewis, who has lived in Reiners’ neighborhood for more than five decades. “I haven’t heard anything about him lately.”

Nick has been open about his struggles in the past.

In 2015, Nick and Rob released a semi-autobiographical film titled “Being Charlie,” a film loosely based on Nick’s real-life experience with addiction and recovery.

“It forced me to see more clearly and understand more deeply what Nick was going through, and I think it forced him to see what I was going through in the process,” Rob said in a 2016 interview. BUILD is YouTube’s live interview series. “This brought us closer together.”

“This whole process made me understand him more. And I think it made me a better father. I hope so. If your child is going through a difficult time, parent, your primary job is to keep your child safe. I felt helpless.”

Nick gave an interview about “Being Charlie” with his family at the Toronto Film Festival in 2015, saying his decision to quit heroin came from a practical realization.

“I’m tired of this. I’m tired of doing this,” he said The Times.“I come from a good family. I’m not supposed to be on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all this.”

During the same interview, Rob spoke candidly about how he was coping with his son’s addiction at the time.

“When Nick told us it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen,” he said. “We were desperate and we listened to people when we should have listened to our son because they had diplomas on their walls.”

“We are so impressed with these people,” Michele added. “They would tell us that he was a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.”

Despite their differences, the film ultimately created a bond between father and son.

“Honestly, when we got to the point of making the movie, it didn’t matter if we had actually made it,” Reiner told The Times. “Because our relationship had become much closer.”

During an appearance “Stupid” podcast Nick described a time in 2018 when he became violent while using meth at his family’s guest house.

“I did 10 tours of my guest house,” he shared. “Not much of a story. I drove myself completely crazy – I think it was cocaine or something – and I was up for days. I started punching things in my guest house.”

Admitting there was “no logic” behind his outburst, Nick said: “Everything in the guest house was destroyed.”

Accordingly TMZRob and Nick allegedly got into a “very loud argument” while attending Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party the night before the murders.

“Nick scared everyone, acted crazy and asked people if they were famous,” a source said. People.

O’Brien’s representative did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

A source told Page Six He said that Nick was “really angry at his father” and “hated himself for not being as talented, productive, or loved as his father or grandfather.”

After the initial investigation into the Reiners’ murders, authorities determined that Nick was “responsible for their deaths.”

Nick was located and arrested at approximately 9.15pm on Sunday. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being held without bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, the LAPD confirmed in a statement.

Rob and Michele had three children together: Jake, Nick and Romy.
