The Ashes 2025-26: Australia’s Steve Smith ruled out of third Test in Adelaide through illness

Australian batsman Steve Smith was ruled out on the morning of the crucial third Ashes Test against England and was replaced by Usman Khawaja.
Smith missed practice on Monday due to illness, then took a hit in the groin when he hit the net on Tuesday morning.
The 36-year-old was off the pitch at the Adelaide Oval before the match started, but left the stadium before the toss.
“Steve’s been feeling a bit under the weather the last few days,” Australia captain Pat Cummins said.
“He struggled a bit this morning but didn’t think he’d get up for it. He headed home.
“We’re pretty lucky to have someone like Osman who can step in right away.”
Khawaja, who was left out when he was named in the Australia XI on Tuesday, comes in to take Smith’s place at number four.
Australia, who are 2-0 up after wins in the first two Tests, will retain the Ashes if they can avoid defeat in Adelaide. The home team won the toss and elected to bat first.
