Loureiro was born in central Portugal and aspired to be a scientist since childhood, Kornbluth said.
He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon and Imperial College in London, respectively. He completed his postdoctoral studies at the plasma physics laboratory of Princeton University in New Jersey and the Culham Center for Fusion Energy, the UK’s national laboratory for such research.
Loureiro then returned to Portugal to serve as principal investigator at Instituto Superior Técnico’s plasma and nuclear fusion institute before joining the MIT faculty in 2016.
In 2022, MIT appointed him deputy director of the plasma science and fusion center. Loureiro had been the director of this laboratory since May 2024.
