The United States government has accepted responsibility for a fatal collision between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an oncoming helicopter. American Airlines regional jet over the Potomac River, killing all 67 people on board two planes.

“The United States acknowledges that it owed Plaintiffs a duty of care and breached it, thereby nearly causing the tragic accident on January 29, 2025,” the Justice Department said in a court filing Wednesday. he said.

The Jan. 29 crash was the worst air disaster in the United States since 2001 and led to restrictions on helicopter flights around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where the airspace is among the most congested in the country.

American Airlines, one of the defendants named in a lawsuit filed by the family of one of the crash victims, did not immediately comment.
