UK foreign minister visits Syria, re-establishes ties

Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa received the British Foreign Minister David Lammy in Damascus, and pointed out to Syria by a senior kingdom official for more than a decade ago.

According to a statement from the Syrian Presidency, Syrian Foreign Minister ASAAD al-Shibani attended the meeting and focused on bilateral relations and ways of strengthening the cooperation between the two countries.

Discussions also touched upon regional and international developments.

European countries are gradually resetting their approach to Syria because of the rebellious forces that overthrew Bashar al-Assad in December of Islamist Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham after more than 13 years of war.

In a separate session, Foreign Minister Al-Shibani held a meeting with Lammy to discuss political dialogue and cooperation in various fields of mutual interest.

Lammy discussed bilateral cooperation, political transition and regional security, according to a statement published by the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and supported the restructuring, inclusive governance and justice of England for the victims of the former regime.

The UK also announced a new financing, including £ 2 million (A4.2 million $) to support the organization to ban the chemical weapons (OPCW) in the elimination of chemical weapons remaining in Syria.

The UK also promised £ 94.5 million human and development aid to support Syrian refugees, which hosts Syrian refugees.

Lammy also met with Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) teams and women -led businesses supported by the UK charity programs.
