Kennedy Center: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will now bear the names of both former President John F. Kennedy and U.S. President Donald Trump, following a vote by the board of trustees on Thursday.

“The Kennedy Center Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to name the institution the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” center spokesperson Roma Daravi said in a statement. “The unanimous vote recognizes that the current President saved the institution from financial ruin and physical destruction. The new Trump Kennedy Center reflects clear bipartisan support for America’s cultural center for generations to come, CNN reported.”
According to CNN, citing a source familiar with the matter, the vote took place during the board meeting that Trump attended by phone. Trump was named president of the Kennedy Center by a newly created board in February and had previously joked about naming the venue the “Trump Kennedy Center.”

At an event in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said he was honored and surprised by the decision, saying, “This was brought up by one of the very distinguished board members, and they voted on it, and there are a large number of board members, and they voted unanimously,” according to CNN.

Meanwhile, Trump also said the Kennedy Center has seen a “record number of donors” under his direction and plans to work with Congress to secure additional funding. “We are saving the building.
