It comes after a source close to the former deputy prime minister said Ms Rayner and Mr Streeting “will not be played as pawns” following reports an agreement had been reached for them to run for the Labor leadership.

“There is no vacancy, no deal,” the source said later. Telegram It reported that Mr Streeting’s allies were pressuring Ms Rayner to sign up for the “joint ticket” for the senior job.

he said Observer In December: “When I took over the Labor Party everyone said to me: ‘You’re not going to change the party.’ We ignored that and carried on.

“Then they said to me, ‘You’re not going to win the election.’ We had a landslide Labor victory. Now, 17 months into a five-year Labor term, they’re saying, ‘You can’t change the country.’

“Every time we’ve been in this situation, we’ve challenged them. That’s what I want to do.”
