Jaxon Peakall: Tributes flow for volunteer firefighter killed by falling tree in WA’s Great Southern

A farmer who died helping fight a raging bushfire has been remembered as a “true champion” by family and friends.

Jaxon Peakall was struck by a falling tree while on patrol at Mindarabin in Western Australia’s Great South region on Tuesday night.

The long-serving volunteer firefighter was seriously injured and died at the scene, about 400 kilometers southeast of Perth.

Mr Peakall was helping firefighters battle a major bushfire in Gnowangerup Shire shortly before the tragedy.

The Mindarabin fire triggered multiple emergency alerts but has since been brought under control.

The fire destroyed more than 5540 hectares of land.

The 34-year-old’s death sent shockwaves through society, with messages pouring in on social media in his memory.

The North Albany Football Club mourns the loss of a beloved member.

North Albany Football Club described Mr Peakall as a “well-loved teammate” who always brought happiness and laughter to the club.

“Rest in peace Jacko, a true champion,” it said on Facebook.

Another post tagged the farmer as a “once-in-a-lifetime friend” who is always helping someone out.

“Jaxon was always laughing and cared deeply about others. He was a go-getter,” the post read.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm said the community was deeply saddened by the loss of Mr Peakall.

“This is a tragic reminder of the dangers facing our brave firefighters who risk their lives to help protect the communities in which they live,” he said.

“Our thoughts are with Jaxon’s family, friends, fellow volunteers and the broader Borden community.”

The death is the second death from fire in the area after Shire of Ravensthorpe deputy chief Mark Mudie died in a bushfire that threatened his property in early December.

The commissioner added that the investigation into the death of the 34-year-old will continue.
