Calls grow to back safety over access in childcare

6 July 2025 11:06 | News

Australians are asked to give priority to security in increasing access to childcare after sexual abuse allegations in early education.

The federal government promised to provide universal access early, but after a Victoria child care worker was accused of more than 70 sex offenses against children, the trust of the parents to the system was shaken.

Minister of Education Jason Clare promised to be very slow to the accepted measures of change, aiming to strengthen the safety standards of Child Care Center.

On Sunday, the opposition Frontbencher Melissa McIntosh increased the reform rate and questioned whether the Labor Party had priorities.

“Priorities should be the safety of our children,” he said to ABC.

“The government has the authority to increase child care in this country and have more children in child care.

“Why is this their priority?”

When the government returned on July 22, the coalition promised to support reforms to help protect children while preparing to accelerate the security legislation.

Any child care operator who cannot maintain minimum standards is prevented from opening new centers.

Those with criminals or cruel and constant violations will be discontinued from the financing of the government’s child care subsidies.

The Victoria government also introduced a record of child care workers and educators, the prohibition of personal mobile phones in the centers, and its own reforms, including compulsory CCTV.

Federal Cabinet Minister Kristy McBain said that after sexual abuse allegations, he hesitated many parents to abandon their children with child care providers, but the increasing living cost left them another option.

“We must make sure that parents trust this system,” he said to Sky News.

“There are some things to do here, but we will really work hard because what we provide is the worst nightmare of every parent.”

Working changes with children’s checks will be discussed at the next state and regional lawyers’ meeting, and in the first stage, a national child care safety pressure will continue by focusing on more strict suggestions for photography, film and compulsory reporting rules.

Some parents wanted men to be banned in child care, but the government did not believe it was a solution to child safety, and the coalition members hesitated.

The allegations of Victoria follow the arrest and accusation of a Brisbane child care worker last year, accused of more than 300 crimes against 60 children in various centers.
