Shubman Gill snubbed from T20 World Cup 2026 squad without warning, Report reveals shocking details

A report reveals a shocking claim that Shubman Gill has been omitted from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad without any prior communication. This development has sparked debates on election transparency, BCCI protocol and how voters in India are handling this omission.
India has announced its squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, less than two months before the tournament starts. The election brought many surprises, but the most shocking decision was Subman Gill is from the squad. The move is an unexpected one, especially considering that he served as T20I vice-captain for a long time and is back in the T20I squad during the 2025 Asia Cup. Ajit Agarkar And suryakumar Yadav suggested that his omission was due to his recent poor batting performance. It also appears that Gill may not have been informed of this decision in advance.
A report by The Times of India reveals: Subman Gill was not informed of his omission from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad before the announcement, despite being part of the T20I squad for the South Africa tour with just a day left before the squad was finalised. He only learned of his expulsion just before the meeting started at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
“Subman Gill was talked about before the meeting. Frankly, we cannot give details, but he explained the combination call. It’s unfortunate for him but at the end of the day you need the best combination for the World Cup,” a BCCI official told the publication.
Captain suryakumar Yadav commented on Gill’s dismissal and emphasized that the decision was based on team combination rather than quality, form or aggression at the top of the order.
“The thing is, when we went to Sri Lanka after the T20 World Cup, when I was officially appointed captain for the first time, we had scored 200 runs in the first match. Gill played a good part in that too.
“It’s not about his form or anything; right now it’s just about the combination. We wanted to have a goalkeeper at the top. We wanted to have someone like Rinku Singh or maybe a Washington Sundar who will have a different combination later on. That’s why we brought an extra goalkeeper at the top. And it’s not just about form, we’re talking about quality here. He’s a terrific player, there’s no doubt about that. It’s just the situation is that we need a goalkeeper to support the order, to have two or three good combinations that can win us the World Cup.”
With Subman Due to Gill’s absence, India will need to appoint a new vice-captain and Aksar Patel has been selected for this role in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Sanju Samson, who was left out of the last few T20Is following Gill’s return, will take on the opening role in the XI. Samson has been in excellent form at the position and scored three T20I centuries last year. Additionally, Rinku Singh was also included in the squad as an extra batsman.
