Interpretation of Constitution has to be pragmatic: CJI

On Saturday, July 5, 2025, the interpretation of the law or the constitution should be “pragmatic” and in accordance with the needs of society.

Speaking here in an accusation of the Supreme Court of Bombay for him, recently “some of his colleagues” complained about the rude behavior and the judges called on the reputation of the institution, he said.

Referring to a Supreme Supreme Court decision, Gavai said that any law or constitution should be interpreted in the context of “problems faced by the current generation”. “The comment must be pragmatic. There must be something that suits the needs of the society.”

Judges are expected to work according to their conscience, duties and law oath, but “the issue should never be disturbed after deciding,” he said.

A judge should cut off the matter and forget what happened later.

When he talked about the appointment of judges, the CJI claimed that “the independence of the judiciary would be compromised without paying any fees”.

Gavai makes an appointment with the high court or high courts, while the college ensures the protection of merit when there is diversity and inclusiveness.

He complimented the Bombay Supreme Court, where he once worked as a lawyer and served as a judge, and served as a judge for his work and said that he was proud of his appreciation of their judgments.

CJI also said that “some of his colleagues have received many complaints about the rude behavior”. “Being a judge is not 10 to 5 jobs, it is an opportunity to serve the society. This is an opportunity to serve the nation,” he stressed and called on the judges “to be loyal for their oaths and devotion.” “Please do not do anything discredited to this August institution, which was built with the dedication and dedication of lawyers and judges for generations for generations.” He said.

Speaking at another Felicitation ceremony later in the evening, CJI said that the constitution works for the last citizen of the country, such as a judge, lawyer, a manager or parliament.

“Let’s dedicate our lives to the elimination of all differences, let us give ourselves to support constitutional values, and direct ourselves to the fulfillment of our constitutional promises.”
