Who Is Motaleb Sikder? Another Student Leader Faces Murderous Attack After Osman Hadi’s Killing | World News

Amid the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh following the murder of student leader Osman Hadi, another student activist was also targeted in a gun attack, according to local media reports.

The victim was identified as Muhammad Motaleb Sikder, the student leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), the organization of which Osman Hadi is a member. Sikder was shot in the head by unidentified assailants in Khulna around 11.45 am on Monday and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

A Bangladeshi daily quoted Animesh Mondol, the officer in charge (of the investigation), as saying that the bullet passed through one side of Sikder’s ear and he was out of danger. He added that the injured leader was taken to the diagnostic center for a CT scan and that investigations into the incident are continuing.

The attack marks another high-profile act of violence in Bangladesh, which has seen rising tensions and bloodshed since the death of Osman Hadi last week.

Radical student leader Sharif Osman Hadi was shot dead by masked gunmen as he left a mosque in Dhaka on December 12. The 32-year-old leader rose to prominence during the student uprising last year that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and was known for his strong anti-India rhetoric.

Hadi’s killing triggered violent protests across the country, with Islamist groups allegedly targeting minority communities. The attempt to kill Sikder has further intensified concerns, especially as Bangladesh moves towards elections scheduled for February 2026.

The National Citizen Party, founded as an extension of student-led protests in August last year, describes itself as the country’s first student-centered political party. The party, which is largely supported by student groups, is expected to contest the upcoming elections by positioning itself against the Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which have traditionally dominated the country’s politics.
