Five dead after plane crashes during ‘medical mission’ | US | News

A small Mexican plane carrying a young medical patient and seven others crashed tragically, resulting in the deaths of at least five people.

The Mexican Navy confirmed that the eight people on board included four Navy officers and four civilians, including a child. However, it is not yet known who died in the accident.

The two passengers were members of the Michou and Mau Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping Mexican children who suffered severe burns. The US Coast Guard has confirmed the deaths of five people and an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon near the base of a pass near Galveston, along the Texas coast, about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) southeast of Houston. The Mexican Navy announced in a statement that the plane encountered an “accident” while on a medical mission.

He added that they assisted local authorities in search and rescue operations.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said its dive team, crime scene unit, drone unit and patrol responded to the crash. Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board teams are also at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said: “The incident remains under investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.”

This beloved beach spot has been plagued by foggy conditions in recent days, and it remains unclear whether that played a role. Around 2:30 p.m. Monday, fog reduced visibility to about half a mile, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.

This foggy weather is expected to continue until Tuesday morning.
