Anger as beach littered after ‘backpacker Christmas party’ | World | News

Australian locals were left unimpressed after a ‘massive backpacker Christmas party’ left an iconic litter-strewn beach in a major clean-up required by the local council.
Sydney’s Coogee beach was filled with Santa hats and booze on December 25 as people basked in the Australian sunshine and celebrated Christmas Day.
But many residents were disgusted to see the large amount of rubbish left behind and others complained about those who decided to use the beauty area as a toilet as the day went on.
Randwick Council said in a statement: “Council staff have begun the clean-up of Coogee Beach following a large Christmas party for backpackers.
“A huge thank you to all our lifeguards, rangers, waste and sanitation staff for all your hard work under difficult conditions on Christmas Day. Thank you.”
In his statement on Facebook, the mayor thanked municipal employees for their efforts.
“In total, more than 20 tonnes of garbage were collected and four truckloads were sent to the garbage collection point,” he said.
“Staff used beach rakes, footpath sweepers, high-pressure hoses and hands-on cleaning to clear litter and clear toilets, sand and grassy areas.
“While many people act responsibly, it is disappointing that some choose to litter and urinate extensively in public spaces.”
While some defended the antics of those leaving litter behind, others were stunned by the lack of respect some showed for the area.
One Facebook user said: “Thank you to everyone who cleaned up. What a shame our beautiful beach is treated so poorly.”
But another man disagreed, saying: “Stop being Scrooge. People had parties, yes it’s a bit of a mess but it’ll get better. I’m glad people can let their hair down and dance in the current climate.”
“Thank you so much to the cleaning team and Merry Christmas.”
Another said: “Why don’t you make them clean up? They made a mess so they could clean it up.”
