Nebraska grandfather killed in McDonald’s drive-thru ‘freak accident,’ police say

A grandfather was killed just days before Christmas in what authorities described as a “freak accident” during a drive-thru at a McDonald’s in Nebraska.
Michael Dickinson, 69, was crushed to death Tuesday morning in Grand Island after being trapped between his vehicle and the checkout window.
The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Grand Island police.
Police said the victim’s next of kin were notified of the death.

Police Department Chief Dean Elliott told KSNB-TV the incident was “100% a freak accident.”
“It appears that the deceased opened the door to reach out the window for payment,” he said.
“We’re not sure if the vehicle was thrown forward or what, but it was trapped between the door frame and the drive-through window counter,” Elliott added.

A McDonald’s employee tried to save the man by jumping from the passenger side of the car but was unsuccessful in his attempt to free Dickinson, Elliott told KSNB. The worker was also injured during the rescue attempt.
The investigation of the incident continues.
Dickinson’s right leg was amputated in 2021, her daughter wrote on Facebook, adding that a few months later she was fitted with a prosthetic and learned to walk again. He did not say why his leg was removed.
His family remembered his “love” during their first Christmas without him and described his willingness to “help and be there in the moments that mattered most.”

“A skilled and hard-working mechanic, Michael took pride in his work and had a talent for fixing broken things. This reflected who he was: reliable, practical and dedicated,” his family wrote.
“Although his life was cut short, Michael’s love, loyalty and kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed and always remembered,” the post said. statement was added.
