Students alleges caste discrimination by teachers in Alawalpur village adopted by Ravi Shankar Prasad

Students of a secondary school in Alawalpur village in Fatuha block in Patna district have raised serious allegations of caste discrimination by their teachers. A few students claimed that their teachers often asked them not to sit with lower-caste students and to maintain the honor of their caste by sitting with students belonging to their own caste.

Now the teachers are threatening the students with dire consequences if they share this with anyone after the issue started to be talked about in the village.

Although the school was closed by the decision of the Regional Criminal Judge of Peace due to the severe cold weather wave, Hindu He managed to meet a few students in the village who shared the shocking practice. The school is located approximately 35 km from Patna.

Sharing the details, class 8 student Arya Nandani Kumari said, “During lunch or in class, when a lower caste student sits with an upper caste student or vice versa, teachers ask them to leave from there and sit with students from their own caste.”

He further said: “Many times if lower caste students are sitting in the front, they are asked to sit in the back.”

Another student, Jiya Kumari, said, “Sarita ma’am always says, don’t we feel ashamed when sitting with lower caste students? If a lower caste student sits next to an upper caste student, the teacher orders him to stand up and go somewhere else. They keep saying that upper caste students should not sit with lower caste students.”

Sheetal Kumari, a student of the same class, said that whenever an argument breaks out between upper class and lower class students, teachers always punish the lower class students and spare the upper class student without asking for any explanation.”

Alawalpur village has been adopted by Ravi Shankar Prasad, who falls under Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY). Alawalpur, which has around 5,000 voters, is an upper-caste Rajput-dominated village.

Sheetal said: “It is really humiliating for us that teachers discriminate on the basis of caste. The atmosphere of the school is such that we are ashamed to study here, but there is only one secondary school in the village and we cannot afford a private school. Discrimination is not new and has been happening for months.”

When asked to name teachers who discriminate on the basis of caste, Rani Kumar said, “Ranjan sir, Sarita mam, Parveen sir, Punam mam and Rina mam. There are teachers who always discriminate against students on the basis of caste.”

Students also claimed that they were forced to do tasks they should not have done, such as sweeping the classroom, opening the door, washing their own plates and glasses after lunch, and closing the doors and windows after class ended.

Aditya Kumar, from the same class, said, “Many times we are asked to do work that we should not do. Teachers ask us to carry sacks full of lunch grains. Each sack weighs around 25 kg and it really hurts to carry it on the back and head.”

Some students said that the quality of MDM was below standards and that they found glass fragments, spiders and ants many times. They also said that even the toilets were barely cleaned and the teacher never came to the school with all his might. Only 4-5 teachers come to school a day and very few of them go home after giving attendance notes.

“The quality of the food is really bad, in the name of MDM we sometimes have to eat food that has insects in it and even broken glass pieces,” Ayush Kumar said.

As the problem spreads in the village, teachers threaten them that they will not be able to obtain the Pass Certificate (TC), which is mandatory to go to high school.

Even parents expressed concern that such a practice would destroy the spirit of the education system and harsh sanctions would be imposed against teachers.

There are three schools in the village: primary school, secondary school and high school. However, according to the villager, the primary school has been closed for the last five months because there is no way to reach the school. Since the land belongs to the builder, the road was closed to traffic due to the construction of the house.

The villagers have made many applications to the relevant government authorities regarding the closure of the road leading to the primary school, but there has been no progress so far.

Ravi Shankar Singh, Sheetal Kumari’s father, said, “More than 300 students studying in primary school have been shifted to high school. You can imagine the problems students will face while studying in a crowded school. You must have seen the road leading to the middle school and high school; it is in a dilapidated state. It becomes very difficult for the student to attend classes during the monsoon season.”

When asked about the students’ allegations, school principal Ranjan Kumar said, “All the allegations are baseless. Our school does not allow any caste discrimination. We just ask boys and girls to sit separately.”

Alavalpur Panchayat President Nitan Devi said that she was also aware of the incident and asked the school principal not to disrupt the education system in the panchayat. He also said that teachers who violate the rules deserve punishment.

Satrunjay Singh, Ms. Devi’s husband, added that it was also the parents’ duty to inform Mukhiya as soon as they came to know about caste discrimination in the school premises. So far, parents have taken all kinds of legal action against the school that took away their ward’s future.
