Banks in India remained closed on Saturday, December 27, as it was the fourth Saturday of the month. As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) norms, all public and private sector banks have holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays. Major lenders such as State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank did not offer branch services today.
Besides the regular closure on Saturday, banks in Nagaland were also closed for Christmas-related celebrations, according to the RBI’s public holiday schedule.
RBI Rules on Public Holidays
The RBI mandates banks across the country to remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month and all Sundays designated as weekly holidays. On the other hand, banks continue to operate on the first, third and, if necessary, the fifth Saturday.
Saturday holidays fall under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which regulates banking activities such as check collection and promissory notes. These holidays directly affect services related to physical branch operations.
Types of Public Holidays in India
The RBI divides public holidays into three broad categories. These include holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays and days reserved for annual closing of bank accounts.
In addition to nationwide holidays, some bank closures are tied to regional festivals and state-specific celebrations. For example, banks may remain closed during local festivals in certain states while operating normally in other places. However, national holidays such as Independence Day and Republic Day lead to uniform lockdowns across India.
Next Public Holiday
The next planned public holiday will be on Sunday 28 December, which is the normal weekly holiday. Banks across the country will also remain closed that day.
Customers are advised to check with their local bank branches or check the RBI holiday calendar before planning time-sensitive transactions, especially those that require physical presence at the branch.
Services Available and Not Available During Holidays
On public holidays, services that require an in-person visit, such as cash withdrawals using cheques, check deposits and document verification, are not available. However, customers can continue to access digital banking services without interruption.
Facilities like ATMs, UPI payments, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS remain functional even during public holidays, allowing customers to carry out important transactions.
Upcoming Public Holidays in December 2025
Several state-specific holidays are planned for late December 2025. Banks will remain closed in Meghalaya on December 30 due to the death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah. On December 31, banks will be closed in Manipur and Mizoram for New Year’s Eve and in Imoinu Iratpa.
Overall, a total of 14 public holidays were recorded in December, including the nationwide Christmas holiday on 25 December, excluding regular weekly holidays.
